Love them or hate them, they’re out there on our highways and on our city streets. Smart cars. Smart cars are those tiny, 2 seater cars that get the best parking spaces. You may not be exactly sure what they are or how they work, so we created a list of Pros and Cons concerning these tiny automobiles so you can get a better understanding how they differ from larger vehicles.
We should note that the Smart Car is no longer sold in the US, but used models are still readily available in certain markets.
Smart Car Pros
Size
If you live or work in a big city, then you know how difficult it can be to find parking, or how expensive it can cost. One of the pros for smart cars is their size. Smart cars can fit and be parked in the smallest spaces, and not just for parallel parking.
Another point that should be made is that you will never be asked to help your friend or neighbor move.

Noise
Smart vehicles are much quieter than their normal sized ancestors which helps when it comes to noise pollution. If you go from living in a rural area to a densely populated urban atmosphere then you know how noisy cars can be.
Smart cars can help reduce the amount of noise pollution and lead to a much more peaceful environment.
Chemical Pollution Reduction
Since smart cars are so small, they use less fuel and some are even hybrids which means they use electricity as fuel. Electric vehicles help to reduce chemical pollution in the atmosphere, making it a greener and more fuel efficient ride than gas-powered cars.
Since smart cars are considered a “green earth friendly vehicle”, a lot of stores have been offering reserved parking spaces just for smart cars. These reserved spaces act as an incentive for those who don’t drive them and also as an award for those who do.
Smart Car Cons:
Size
Let’s start the cons list at the same place that we started on the pros list. The size of the smart car can be a real inconvenience. The vehicle is not particularly good for taking more than one passenger, so if you need a vehicle that you can pack to the brim, then a smart car is most likely not for you. If you go grocery shopping, it is a good idea to plan ahead and shop conservatively.

Safety
Like every other car manufacturer, Smart Car also claims to have the newest, best and safest technology when it comes to crash safety. Here’s the thing, if a smart car that is involved in a head-on collision with any other full-sized vehicle doesn’t have much of a chance of survival, much less the driver and passenger, regardless of whatever safety features the vehicle may have.
Appearance
Though we should be responsible adults when it comes to picking out a car, the truth is that there is something in all of us that will put into consideration the look or appearance of our vehicle. For some, a Mercedes Benz or a Ford is the way to go. For others, it’s a smart car. You can imagine that while there is a market for the vehicle, there are also those who are driven away by its appearance.
Summary
In general, those in favor of smart cars appreciate that they are cheaper to maintain and have a lower carbon footprint. Looking forward, they also have the ability to be self-driving which can be a big advantage in today’s busy and distracted world.
The advantages of smart cars or EVs are well known, but there are also disadvantages. The range of EV can be limited, and charging them might take too long. Some feel that the major disadvantages of smart cars are that they can be hacked and the data can be stolen. The other disadvantage is that they can be expensive to buy.
However you feel about the smart car, there is no denying the fact that it is innovative and growing in popularity. Do your own research before purchasing any vehicle. Do some test drives and talk to owners. Your car will be your car and the only opinion that matters is yours.
