How much does Rivian auto insurance cost?
Rivian auto insurance is usage-based car insurance. This means that your driving style determines your rates. However, Rivian still considers your driving record, age, and gender. The good news is that these factors won’t impact your Rivian insurance costs as much as they do at other companies.
However, because Rivian’s vehicles are electric, you can still expect your auto insurance rates to be more expensive. According to Consumer Reports, EVs cost more to insure because they are more expensive to repair and replace than gas-powered vehicles.
On average, electric car insurance rates range between $175-$225 per month depending on the make, model, and where you live.
To keep electric car insurance costs as low as possible for drivers, Rivian offers its own repair services and insurance coverage. The company crafts many of its own parts in-house, making repairs locally and more affordably than other insurance companies that aren’t as experienced with EVs.
Rivian auto insurance is also underwritten by Nationwide, which is cheaper than average in some states. Take a look at the table below to see how Nationwide compares to other insurance companies offering usage-based coverage:
Auto Insurance Company Auto Insurance Rates A. M. Best Rating
Root $65/mo N/A
Metromile $65/mo N/A
State Farm $98/mo A++
Progressive $103/mo A+
Travelers $141/mo A+
Allstate $184/mo A+
Nationwide $186/mo A+
These rates could increase for electric car insurance vs. gas, but Rivian determines its rates based on your driving style and how often you use the vehicle’s safety features. So, your Rivian auto insurance quotes could be cheaper when you start using the company’s telematics system.
In addition to Nationwide, Rivian also partners with The Cincinnati for its insurance.

How does Rivian auto insurance coverage work?
Rivian auto insurance is designed specifically for its EVs: the R1T, an all-electric pick-up truck, and the R1S, an all-electric SUV.
Rivian auto insurance policies cater to EVs, including alleviating expensive repair costs and rewarding drivers for using the vehicles’ telematics and automated driving features. For example, each Rivian EV is equipped with Driver+ safety technology.
When you buy Rivian auto insurance, you automatically receive the Driver+ discount.
Driver+ technology offers automated driving assistance. Drivers are rewarded with cheaper Rivian auto insurance rates the more often they use Driver+ features, including:
- Cruise control
- Automatic steering
- Automatic braking and accelerating
- Lane centering
- Lane-change assistance
- Towing assistance
This differs from the proprietary car insurance for a Tesla, which uses telematics to determine rates but doesn’t offer an additional discount for how often drivers use the EV’s unique features.
In addition, if you sign up for Rivian Driver+ Highway Assist, which automatically steers and accelerates for you when highway driving, you’ll be offered lower rates during your renewal period.
Is Rivian auto insurance coverage available in my state?
According to its website, Rivian auto insurance is currently available in 46 states, including Washington D.C. The company plans to offer coverage nationwide by the end of 2022, if not earlier. Rivian auto insurance coverage should extend to New York in early 2022.
However, it’s important to research your state insurance laws before buying from the Rivian auto insurance company.
While drivers can buy Rivian vehicles direct online from any state, some state laws forbid direct sales from the manufacturer. This means that Rivian is prevented from establishing storefronts or offering test drives in some states. Speak with a Rivian insurance representative to confirm coverage is available in your state before you buy.
What kind of coverage does Rivian offer?
Rivian auto insurance includes the minimum liability coverage you need in your state. You also have the benefit of adding collision and comprehensive coverage.
You may see cheaper Rivian auto insurance quotes for full coverage policies direct from the company because Rivian offers affordable in-house repairs through its own collision and service centers. Other companies may charge more to insure the expensive parts in an EV.
Drivers also have the option to buy medical payments coverage, personal injury protection, and uninsured/underinsured motorist protection from Rivian. These coverages are required in some states, so, again, double-check your state laws before you drive without the right insurance.
Can I cover my other vehicles with Rivian insurance?
Yes, Rivian auto insurance can be applied to other vehicles, not just the R1T and R1S.
However, you must own at least one Rivian vehicle to buy Rivian auto or homeowners insurance.
Rivian insurance can be applied to ATVs and other off-roading vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, campers, and more recreational vehicles. Rivian also offers homeowners and renters insurance. If you bundle your policies together, you can earn up to 20% off your Rivian auto insurance rates.
What programs are included with Rivian auto insurance?
Rivian auto insurance coverage includes a comprehensive Rivian Service program. Rivian Service includes:
- Rivian Remote Care, a remote diagnostic system that tracks the performance of its EVs
- Vehicle loaner program
- Mobile repair and replacement services
- Automatic remote system updates
With Rivian Remote Care, technicians can diagnose and order replacement parts quickly. Rivian Service will then come to policyholders to repair or pick up vehicles. If your Rivian EV needs to be taken to a service center, you’ll be offered a loaner vehicle from the company until repairs are finished.
Adding additional programs and services to your policy can raise your insurance rates, so it’s important to determine what coverages you need and don’t need. Compare multiple options before you buy to lock in the best rates.
What are Rivian’s insurance ratings?
Overall, Rivian reviews are very positive, both financially and from customer reviews.
Financially, the company is supported by Nationwide, Ford Motor Company, and Amazon. Rivian isn’t a large enough company to have its own A.M. Best Rating, but Nationwide’s rating can give you an idea of its financial outlook.
Take a look at the table below to see how the largest companies compare:
Top 10 Auto Insurance Companies by Direct Premiums Written, Loss Ratio, Market Share, and A.M. Ratings

1 State Farm $41,963,578,000 63 17.01% A++ (Superior)
2 Geico $33,075,434,000 71 13.41% A++ (Superior)

5 USAA $14,467,936,000 77 5.87% A++ (Superior)

8 Nationwide $6,726,799,000 58 2.73% A+ (Superior)
9 Travelers $4,697,743,000 60 1.9% A++ (Superior)
10 American Family $4,687,909,000 69 1.9% A (Excellent)
As you can see, Nationwide earned a Superior A+ rating, meaning it has the financial ability to pay out on claims. This also means it has the financial strength to pay out on Rivian auto insurance claims as well.
When it comes to customer service, Rivian’s NAIC score is 0.53, meaning it sees half the complaints of other companies its size.
However, it’s important to note that Rivian is a newer company. The first Rivian SUVs were just delivered to drivers in October 2021. So, customers have not had coverage long enough to truly test the company’s claim process, which is a true testament to any insurance company’s customer service rating. Rivian auto insurance has plenty of time to make mistakes or make big strides in this industry.
How do I get Rivian auto insurance quotes?
Rivian auto insurance quotes are available to drivers who own a Rivian EV. You can reach an insurance advisor, file a claim, cancel or change your coverage, or otherwise speak with customer service by calling the Rivian auto insurance number at 1-888-748-4261.
As you shop for affordable Rivian auto insurance, expect to pay anywhere between $175-$225 per month.
Electric car insurance costs more than a gas-powered vehicle. Your rates may drop over the next few years as EVs become more mainstream and insurance companies gather more information. But, until then, you will have to find other ways to reduce your electric car insurance rates.
Fortunately, with Rivian auto insurance, you can lower your rates by using Rivian’s Driver+ and Highway Assist technology and bundling your policies with Rivian homeowners or renters insurance. Rivian bundling discounts can add up to 20% off your rates. However, you can only qualify for this discount and coverage if you already own a Rivian vehicle.
In order to offer the cheapest insurance rates possible, Rivian offers coverage exclusively to drivers who own Rivian EVs. You can apply this coverage to other vehicles and property you own, but you must own a Rivian vehicle to be eligible for this coverage in the first place.
The easiest way to find the cheapest Rivian auto insurance quotes is to comparison shop with multiple companies at once. Enter your ZIP code below to start comparing local insurance companies today for free.
